The Mother of all memories

The power of recall is amazing. What we recall and how we order those thoughts into memories is fascinating. We often remember the sensory things – the way things or people smelt, a sweet taste, what music was playing, how textures felt and the way things looked. Which highlights a favourite pastime of ours – looking through old photos of our mums to see what they were wearing, how they were wearing it and hear the stories of where they bought those prized items, were they wore them to and the memories that they held.

Angelina Jolie’s mum Marcheline Bertrand

Kate Hudson’s mum Goldie Hawn

These fashion memories impact on our own fashion journeys and personal style. They also highlight how special and multifaceted a mother-daughter bond is. Here are some of our favourite mother-daughter duos we take inspiration from…

Lupita Nyong’o and Dorothy Nyong’o

“What my mother meant when she said you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul.” Lupita Nyong’o

“My mother is amazing, and I know all daughters or children will say this, it sounds very biased, but she is very unique. She’s saved my life many times.” Charlize Theron

Get Gerda’s classic look:

“I’m so grateful that my mum is fulfilled by what she does. I imagine it’s hard for women – and men – who have to give up what they love. I admire my parents enormously. They both do what they love and it makes them happy – and makes for a happy home.” Mamie Gummer

As Mother’s Day month comes to an end lets continue to celebrate our mothers by remembering all the beauty she holds within the various aspects of our lives, whether it be it in memory or in person.

Till next time
